A video of a lightly-clothed yogi meditating in the middle of a snowstorm in the Himalayas has gone viral online sparking a heated debate about its authenticity.
We live in a time when the old saying “seeing is believing” just doesn’t apply anymore. The advent of artificial intelligence and deepfake technology has made it possible to create virtually anything and make it look authentic. Realistic-looking AI news anchors and digital influencers are a part of this new reality, so you can’t blame people for doubting their eyes. Case in point, a viral video out of India showing a yogi with his hair and beard caked with snow meditating high up in the mountains during a snowstorm. He looks so comfortable in one of the harshest environments on Earth that many people rightly believed it was staged or the result of AI digital manipulation.
The debate around this viral video made national headlines in India, and Kaulantak Peeth, a spiritual organization in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh, had to put out a statement that the footage was genuine. Apparently, the yogi in the clip, identified as Satyendra Nath, has long been associated with the organization and has been meditating in the Himalayas for over two decades.
Earlier this month, Satyendra Nath and his disciples traveled to the Seraj Valley in Kullu district for a month. One day, knowing that their master was high up in the mountains meditating and hearing that a snowstorm was about to hit the area, Satyendra’s disciples rushed to warn him. What they found left them in a state of disbelief.

“When we went to speak to Satyendra Nath, we found him in a state of deep meditation in the snow-capped mountains,” Rahul, one of his disciples, said. “So, we decided to record his video.”
According to Savarninath, the yogi’s other disciple, Satyendra is a follower of the Himalayan yoga tradition and has been meditating in the snow-capped mountains for the past 22 years. He added that the viral video shot by Rahul is just one of several they recorded of Satyendra Nath over the last month.

Satyendra Nath is not the first yogi to meditate at extreme temperatures in the Himalayas, but his disciple’s video was particularly impressive because of the snowstorm and the master’s snow-caked beard and hair.
