Goldin Finance 117, an unfinished 597-meter-tall skyscraper on the outskirts of Tianjin, China’s seventh largest city, is currently the world’s tallest abandoned building.

Originally designed to be the centerpiece of a luxurious real-estate project in Tianjin, Goldin Finance 117, aka China 117 Tower, is famous for being the world’s tallest unfinished and unoccupied building. Construction began in 2008, but was halted just two years later, during the fallout of the Great Recession. Work on the project was resumed in 2011, with an estimated completion date between 2018 and 2019. However, by September 2015, construction was once again suspended and has not resumed since. When work on Goldin Finance 117 was suspended, the impressive skyscraper was the fifth tallest building in the world. Now it’s the world’s tallest abandoned building.

A 73-storey skyscraper in Shenzen, China, was recently evacuated after it reportedly started shaking for no apparent reason, sending inhabitants into a panic.

On Tuesday afternoon, SEG Plaza, a 20-year-old skyscraper in Shenzen, started wobbling visibly, prompting both people inside and those on the streets below to flee for their lives. Videos shared on social media by people in the vicinity at the time of the freak occurrence, show the giant edifice leaning from one side to the other,  and furniture on the inside shaking. By the time the Shenzhen Emergency Management Bureau evacuated the building, it had stopped shaking, but the plaza remained sealed off until the investigation into the cause of the wobbling was concluded.

Chinese construction company Broad Sustainable Building recently released an online video showing how they managed to build a 57-storey building in a record time of 19 days. ‘Sky City’, located in Changsha city, comprises 800 homes and office space to accommodate a total of 4,000 people.

The company’s original proposal for the site was actually a 97-storey building that would have been the world’s largest skyscraper. But just after 20 stories were completed, construction work was stopped for one year because local officials wanted to review the plans. Ultimately, they had to reduce the plan to 57 stories due to the building’s close proximity to the airport.

In spite of the major delay, the entire construction from start to finish was completed in less than three weeks of work. The 4-minute clip shows employees building each storey offsite and delivering it to the location. A timelapse sequence shows the assembling of the mammoth building which require a total of 19 days to complete – that’s exactly three floors per day!
