Elmer Padilla, a young construction worker from Manila, Philippines, recently shot to internet fame after photos of his hand-made action figures went viral on multiple social networks.

While being able to make your own action figures is an impressive talent in itself, what really caught people’s attention was the medium used by the Filipino amateur artist – old flip-flops. Photos posted on a Facebook group dedicated to Filipino art show Elmer Padilla cutting colorful flip-flops on a sidewalk using knives and scissors, and assembling them into intricate toys like Transformers, Predator and Marvel superheroes. As you can see in the photos below, his creations are nothing short of awe-inspiring.

This wonderful collection of junk action figures was put together by Private First Class Rupert Valero, who is stationed at a forward operating base in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

A former oil rig engineer, Valero has been collecting and customizing action figures for years, but ever since he was sent to Afghanistan, he had to create his own action figures from recycled materials like bottle caps, soda cans and fabric. The artists/soldier says he has the mind of an engineer and never stops thinking about building things, whether they be robots, buildings, or anything else for that matter. It’s just his way of staying sane in a dangerous place like Afghanistan.

Because toys are universal, people react to them the same whether they are in the middle of the desert or in America, and Private Valero says they have allowed him to interact with the locals. By giving a child one of his upcycled action figures he puts a smile on his face and maybe takes his mind off doing something that he shouldn’t do.

Did you ever wonder what Star Wars would have looked like if it had been directed by Japanese director Akira Kurosawa, instead of George Lucas? Well, someone did, and here’s what they came up with.

Sillof, a high-school history and film teacher with no formal art training, imagined the Star Wars characters through the eyes of legendary Japanese director Akira Kurosawa. He remembered George Lucas saying he was a fan of Kurosawa, and that he used his “the Hidden Fortress” as inspiration for Star Wars and decided to create a series of samurai style Star Wars action figures.

The Samurai Star wars cast definitely hints at the original characters, but they stay true to the Japanese style as well. Truly unique works of art, Sillof’s action figures can be admired in all their glory, at his online workshop.
