Crocodile Cage of Death

Although getting up-close and personal with a crocodile isn’t anyone’s idea of a good time, the recently opened Crocosaurus Cove theme park, in Darwin, Australia has introduced this situation as a breathtaking attraction.

For about $80 anyone can be lowered in Choppa‘s underwater lair, in a reinforced acrylic cage for a 15 minute heart-thumping experience. Choppa is an aggressive saltwater crocodile rescued from a crocodile farm where he got into conflicts with other crocodiles. If Crocosaurus Cove hadn’t taken him in he would have been shot.

Animal activists criticized the new attraction saying it was taunting the crocodile and intruding in his environment but the staff says the animal has been given a home and is treated like a king, a much better alternative than death.

So if you’re ever in Darwin and looking for a unique thrill, head over to Crocosaurus Cove and meet Choppa. You can get the same adrenalin rush at the Crocodile Wildlife Ranch, in South Africa

World’s Biggest Salmon

I love salmon, especially smoked, but I never knew they were so ugly. Just so you don’t lose your appetite completely, I will say not all salmon looks this bad, only Chinook salmon.

This particular Chinook salmon was found by biologist Doug Killam in Battle Creek, near Anderson and is apparently the largest salmon in the world, weighing 85 pounds. I should say was the largest salmon in the world since Killam only found the carcass.  Take a look:

The Most Dangerous Walk to School

If you feel your kid has it tough because he lives a long way from school, take a look at these photos. The kids of Gulucan village in Western China have to walk a steep trail carved in a 5000m high cliff in order to reach their school. Compared to these poor children, your offspring has it good.

Wetas – The Giant Crickets

Cook Strait Giant Wetas are a species of giant insects that grow to be 10cm long and around 27 grams heavy. Just so you can get an idea, these bugs are about the size of a city rat. They have been extinct on the mainland of New Zealand for more than a century, but the authorities are trying to reintroduce the species to the area, and the first 100 Wetas have been brought to Kraori Wildlife Sanctuary in Wellington, in 2007.

You may think Giant Wetas are hideous and dangerous but the truth is they are passive creatures that feed on fruit and plant and they are less destructive than their smaller cricket brethren. The Wetas are protected from rats and stoats that led to their extinction 100 years ago.

Bottle Temple in Thailand

Wat Pa Maha Kaew Temple is the only temple in the world build out of glass bottles and bottle caps. It all began in 1984 when the Buddhist monks started gathering bottles to decorate their shelters. The lovely bottle art-work they created attracted more and more visitors that began donating bottles, until there were enough to build an entire building.

Translated as “Temple of Million BottlesWat Pa Maha Kaew is located  in Siasaket province, about 370 miles northeast of Thailand’s capital city, Bangkok. There are approximately 1,5 millionglass bottles incorporated in the temple complex, that includes glass shelters, crematorium and even glass toilets.

The bottles make for a surprisingly easy to maintain building material, they let the light in and they don’t fade. The monks are still collecting glass bottles to build even more structures at Wat Pa Maha Kaew.

Meet Eak the Geek

From the people who brought you The Zombie Boy, Bizarre Magazine, comes Eak the Geek

I’m sure you look at thi guy and say to yourself: This guy belongs in a circus!” And he actually was a part of the Coney Island Circus Slideshow, in New York, where he was known as Eak the Geek, The Pain-Proof Man or The Man Who Painted His Face Like Outer Space. His acts included walking on broken glass, or asking people to walk over him as he was sandwitched between two beds of nails.

But that’s all behind 45-year-old Eduardo Arrocha, who is now a stundent at a presitgious law school in Michigan and trying to make something of his life. And although it’s hard for him to fit in looking as he does, his father is a big-shot in corporate law, so he probably has the genes to pull-ut off.

Eak the Geek says law school is the hardest thing he has ever undertaken, making acting in a freakshow seem like a piece of cake. He’s now telling people he left a freakshow for another.

Record Attempt Close to Ending Tragically

A Chinese balance-beam artist attempted a new world record for balancing on a wire 700 meters into the air with no safety measures. Unfortunately things didn’t go exactly as planned and one false step almost ended his career and his life. Fortunately he was quick enough to grab on to the wire he was balancing on.

Though he couldn’t control his emotions and started acting all hysterical, he managed to hold-on until the cavalry showed up and got him down safely. I bet he won’t be trying to break any records in the near future.

Swimming with Tigers

At the Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species in South Carolina anyone can witness how beautiful tiger handlers swim in a big pool together with the big cats. During their studies here, animal experts learned that tigers and human develop a stronger relationship in the water and that the cats are easier to handle, since they don’t stand on their back legs.

Unlike other cats, tigers are great swimmers and they enjoy spending as much time as possible in the water. However, because they slowly grow into dangerous killing machines, the handlers only swim with them until they turn one year old. Dr. Bhagavan Antle says he has got nto the water with full-grown 15-year-old tigers and ligers (cross between a lion and a tiger), but he can’t put his staff in the same kind of danger.

Setenil de las Bodegas – living under a rock

That’s literally what some of the inhabitants of Setenil de las Bodegas feel like, because part of this small Spanish town is covered by a large cliff. And this big piece of stone looks like it could come tumbling down on tens of houses if an earthquake happens in the area.

Ryugyong – World’s Largest Deserted Hotel

Who knew North Korea had the second largest hotel in the world? Too bad it’s deserted.

Ryugyong Hotel was one of Kim Jong Il‘s plans of really putting North Korea on the World Map. He thought the best way to do that would be to build the world’s largest structure. The Koreans started buillding Ryugyong in 1987 but ceased construction in 1992 due to serious financial difficulties. The country never recovered from its financial crisis so the work on Ryugyong never picked up, until 2008 when the government decided to resume work on their giant super-structure.

With North Korea‘s tourism at an absolute low, Ryugyong Hotel will probably be nothing more than a really large building, although Kim Jong Il has tried to convince the world that his huge hotel is a success by faking images and spreading them in the media.

World’s Tallest LEGO Tower Moves to Vienna

A few months ago I wrote a post about the world’s tallest tower near Legoland Windsor, in England, but now it is forced to hand over the title to the new LEGO Tower in Vienna.

Built by hundreds of children near Vienna‘s city-hall, the new world’s tallest LEGO tower ended up being 29,48 meters tall, beating the previous tower of “only” 29,03 meters. The LEGO tower in Vienna was built using a crane and several support wires that secured it against strong winds. After the record was certified by an official judge from The Guinness Book of Records, the LEGO Tower was dismantled.

The Tower of Vienna was created to celebrate the festival “100 Years of Friends of Children“.

What Coca-Cola Does to Your Stomach

There has been a lot of speculation about the effect of Coca Cola on the human stomach. There were those that said that the popular beverage could literally cause our intestines to melt if we drink to much of the stuff. Coca Cola always denied the rumors and said that their product is no worse than other soft drinks on the market and there was no official proof of the “dissolving effect“.

So a bunch of guys decided to conduct their own experiment and find out if the rumors are true. They just took a piece of red meat, put it in a plate and poured some Coca Cola over it. They left it there for two days and took some photos throughout their experiment. The Coke didn’t completely dissolve the meat but you can see that it doesn’t look like anything you’d like to have inside your body. And the smell was unbearable.

I’m sure pretty much everyone knew  that Coca Cola wasn’t the healthiest drink on the market, but I for one didn’t think it could do that to flesh. No more Coke for me!

Crazy Self-Sustainable Chair

Created by Korean artist JooYoun Paek, the self-sustainable chair is a polyethylene-made dress, connected to a pair of special pair of shoes that pump air into the dress, with every step you take. After a short walk, the dress inflates in the back forming a nice “little” chair that makes it possible for you to stop, sit on it and rest for a bit. Depending on the wearer’s weight, the dress deflates allowing him to carry on with his walk.

The self-sustainable dress is an artistic concept that “motivates people to switch between walking and sitting  as a loop behavior on the street”. One couldn’t actually use the self-sustainable chair on a day-to-day basis, it makes you look like you just arrived from another planet.

Here’s a test-drive of the self-sustainable chair in New York:
