Young Man Goes Viral for Documenting His Life as a Kept Man in Japan

A Chinese man known only by his online moniker, Sudden Fantasy, has been receiving a lot of attention online for documenting his life as a jobless man financially supported by his loving wife.

Sudden Fantasy began posting videos on Douyin (Chinese version of TikTok) roughly a month ago, but he already has over 1.4 million followers on the popular social network, mainly because of the unique topic he covers. The Chinese young man posts about his life as a kept man in Japan relying exclusively on his wife for financial support. He reportedly moved to the neighboring country about eight years ago and went to date his wife, whose Chinese name is Fenghua, after falling down on hard times. She was there for him when he needed help putting food on the table and covering his tuition, and she eventually became his wife. Despite being well-educated and coming from a wealthy family, Fenghua has no problem providing for her husband who loves sitting around playing video games.

The Chinese man told his followers that Fenghua has been the main provider for their family ever since they got married, but he finally embraced his position as a kept man last year when he quit his job and began relying on his wife completely. She takes care of all the bills and expenses and he just sits at home playing video games and making sure Fenghua is comfortable.

To make sure Sudden Fantasy is comfortable, his wife allegedly set up a jar with 260,000 yen (about $1,750) for his daily expenses. He claims he can’t really repay her what he spends because that would make her cry. Instead, he shows his gratitude by keeping her company and showing his affection.

For example, on weekends, Sudden Fantasy gets up at around 7, but stays in bed until noon, when Fenghua usually wakes up, and then stays by her side as she scrolls through her phone until 3 pm. He claims that getting out of bed early would make her feel anxious and pressured to wake up earlier too, which is something he doesn’t want to do.

When Fenghua does chores around the house, Sudden Fantasy is always near her, “hovering like a vulture,” and even though he doesn’t actively help her, the idea of him being around and available in case she needs help is reassuring. He also does these little shows of affection, like letting his wife use the bathroom first, so she doesn’t feel the wet floor.

“You have no idea how uncomfortable it is to step on cold tiles after a long workday,” Sudden Fantasy said. “A good mood can be ruined instantly. So, I make sure the bathroom is dry before she uses it.”

Despite going out of his way to make his wife feel comfortable and appreciated, Sudden Fantasy says that the secret to being the ultimate kept man is to find a balance and live in harmony with one’s partner. Only trying to please the other party is doomed to fail in the long term.

Although the notion of a “kept man” is usually frowned upon in Japan, a country where the man is considered the head pf the family and the main breadwinner, Sudden Fantasy has been accepted by his in-laws. In China, he has risen to internet fame because of his openness about his status as a kept man, which many find inspiring.

“It’s like paying for one person’s meals but getting a nanny and an emotionally supportive partner in return. Honestly, it’s not a bad deal – I want one too!” one person commented.
