A Dutch physical therapist turned inventor has spent 15 years developing a tailor-made pillow that he claims will solve any sleeping problems. At a price of $57,000, it better!
Created by Thijs van der Hilst, who is supposedly some sort of neck specialist, the world’s most expensive pillow is made of Mulberry silk, Egyptian cotton, non-toxic Dutch memory foam and 24-carat gold fabric, while its zipper is studded with four diamonds and a huge 22.5-carat sapphire. It sounds pretty expensive already, but it takes more than high-quality materials and jewelry to justify such an outrageous price tag for a pillow.
van der Hilst didn’t set out to create this pricey sleeping aid as a mere symbol of someone’s wealth. He wanted to create the perfect sleeping pillow for his clients, and decided that the only way to do that was to offer a tailor-made solution based on a person’s body shape and sleeping habits.
“As a cervical specialist I used to advise my patients to buy a good pillow. But what is the best pillow for which patient, I asked myself. If there are three sizes of pillows available, which one would fit the best? As our feet are all different, so are our shoulder heights and neck lengths. And the sleeping position varies person to person. Everyone is unique – so the pillow should be too,” Thijs van der Hilst said.
Using a portable 3D scanner, the inventor is able to offer detailed 3D scans for clients around the world, which are then sent to van der Hilst’s team, in the Netherlands. There an in-house algorithm is used to calculate and draw the right pillow, which is then carved out of non-toxic memory foam memory by a robotic milling machine. This complex process ensures that the pillow is perfect for every client.
And as an added bonus, the pillow comes in a custom-made Louis Vuitton case so you can take it everywhere with you.
Feel like spending $57,000 on a pillow, now? No, I didn’t think so, but then again, you’re probably not a person who already has everything. You know, the kind that spends $2 million on the ultimate dining experience, $14 million for an unforgettable 20-day trip around the world, or half a million dollars for a belt-buckle. These people would most likely spend a bit of “change” on a bespoke pillow, and most likely will.
Thijs van der Hilst has announced that he will be unveiling the fruit of a decade and a half or research and development at the Index Design Series interiors exhibition, in Dubai, next month. The event’s director said that the world’s most expensive pillow is one of the most anticipated products they ever had at Index.

“As an interiors exhibition, we cater to all budgets and styles and can’t wait to see the response to a pillow that guarantees a perfect night’s sleep. For me, I’d maybe need a lie down after spending $57,000 on a pillow, but many of our visitors may well just find that Thijs creativity, expertise and advanced technologies could change their lives forever,” Samantha Kane-Macdonald said.
So there we have it, a tailor-made pillow that costs as much as an expensive car. What will they think of next…
