We’ve seen polygamy, same-sex marriages and even threesomes. But what about the polyamorous? Defined as the practice of having more than one intimate relationship at a time with the full knowledge and consent of everyone involved, Jaiya Ma’s relationships are a perfect example of this.

This is the bizarre story of Jaiya, aged 34, and her two lovers – Jon Hanauer, 49, and Ian Ferguson, 44, along with – get this – the baby she’s had with Ian. Confused? Let’s start from the beginning. Jaiya and Jon met in 2000 and lived together for six years, when Jon suggested that she take a new lover… Incidentally, they had met at a Tantric Yoga class and fell in love when they were training to be teachers. At the time, Jaiya was engaged to another man, Tony, who wasn’t comfortable in an open relationship and called it quits. She then lived with Jon in an open relationship the whole time.

In 2007, Jaiya met and fell for a much younger man. And Jon was completely okay with it, even encouraging her. But this one ended up cheating on her with her friend, before she could give her consent. So, Jon was devastated, feeling that he should have done more to protect Jaiya. She continued in her quest to find a better man with the support of Jon, and even placed an ad on Craigslist. It was at a dance class that she had finally met Ian, and once again, the connection was instant.

When Jaiya eventually became pregnant with Ian’s baby, he moved in with her and Jon. The two men were present when she gave birth to a baby boy in a birthing pool. They now live together as one big happy family – Jaiya, Jon, Ian and two-and-a-half year-old Eamon. Apparently, the three of them are not content and are on the lookout for more partners. “I’m looking for adventure at the moment, so I might want to find another partner in the future. But I’ll always have a relationship with Jon and Ian, however that evolves,” says Jaiya. Ian has similar plans too. He says, “I hope if we have new relationships they will add to the group. It would be great to have other polyamorous people in our area, so the community can support each other.”
