Arizona Restaurant Encourages Patrons to Lick Its Himalayan Salt Wall

The Mission, a popular restaurant in Scottsdale, Arizona, has been getting a lot of attention for encouraging visitors to literally lick a wall made of pink Himalayan salt.

One of the last things you’d expect to see people doing at a restaurant, at least one that reputedly serves delicious food, is licking the walls, and yet that’s exactly what many patrons of The Mission restaurant have been doing for the past 17 years. And it’s not like the staff and management don’t know about it, on the contrary, they are the ones encouraging people to lick their famous wall made of pink Himalaya salt.

Located in Old Town Scottsdale, The Mission has long been known for its delicious dishes and the pink salt wall built around its kitchen. According to WLBT3, the head chef was the one who brought the salt rocks in to add to the overall ambiance of the place and to give patrons a new way of enjoying their tequila shots. Suck on a lime, lick the wall and down the shot. At least that was the original idea, but people started licking it whether they were drinking tequila or not.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, isn’t licking a public wall of salt unhygienic, not to mention gross? I’m with you on both, but according to The Mission, Himalayan salt has self-cleaning properties so there’s little risk of catching a disease. And if that wasn’t reassuring enough, the restaurant staff also wipe the wall clean regularly.
