Online scammers tricked a 63-year-old Los Angeles woman into thinking that she was in a romantic relationship with Spanish musician Enrique Iglesias.
Guadalupe Cepeda has been a fan of Enrique Iglesias for over two decades, so when the “Bailamos” singer approached on social media one day, she couldn’t believe it. He apparently found her on an online fan group and she didn’t find it at all suspicious that the man millions of women have been dreaming of for almost thirty years singled her out for a virtual relationship. Their “affair” began two years ago, and despite being married to another man, Cepeda believed that she would one day marry Iglesias. She planned to break up with her husband and run away with the Spanish superstar. Only before they could be together, Enrique needed her to send him some money.
Over the two years, Guadalupe spoke to Enrique via message, she ended up sending him several thousands of dollars, thinking that he actually needed the money. At one point, when his insistence that she send him money became too much, she told him that she didn’t have a job anymore, but he ruthlessly told her to steal it from her husband or find another source if she really wanted to be with him.
The gullible woman’s husband allegedly learned about the scam after discovering their conversations on her phone. Only instead of confronting her and threatening ti leave, he struggled to open her eyes. he tried explaining to her that she wasn’t really talking to Enrique Iglesias, but someone importers trying to bleed her bad, but she wouldn’t hear of it. Not even tracing the source of the star’s messages to Nigeria didn’t change her mind.
Guadalupe’s husband was very understanding, despite her refusal to accept the obvious. He came up with the idea of going Univisión’s Primer Impacto program to tell her romantic story in the hope of finally learning the truth. The segment went viral, and soon, the entire world knew about her relationship with a scammer posing as Enrique Iglesias.
Shockingly, even after going on public television, Guadalupe still isn’t convinced that the man she has been exchanging texts with for the past couple of years isn’t the real Enrique Iglesias. Her husband has appealed to the Spanish singer to come out and clarify that it wasn’t him talking to his wife.
“What I feel is sincere. My marriage is ending because I’m in love with you,” Cepeda told the Spanish singer.
Although Enrique didn’t react to this unusual story at first her recently posted on Instagram, instructing fans to be vigilant and only trust his official channels in order to prevent similar scams.
Interestingly, such brazen scams have become more frequent recently. Just a few months ago, we wrote about a 63-year-old French woman who believed she was in an online relationship with Hollywood heartthrob Brad Pitt and sent him around 800,000 over several years.
