20-Year-Old Man Takes Own Mother to Court for Throwing Aways His Comic Collection

A 20-year-old Taiwanese man got so mad after his elderly mother threw away his prized manga collection without his consent that he took her to court and refused to reconcile with her.

A 64-year-old woman from Chiayi City, Taiwan, landed in hot water after throwing away her young son’s 32-volume ‘Attack on Titan’ manga collection. The two were living together, and the 64-year-old woman had become fed up with her son’s ever-growing comic collection, so when she stumbled over his Attack on Titan manga collection and determined that the volumes were a little damp, she decided to recycle them and free up some much-needed space. She never checked with her son if it was ok, and when he came home and learned that his 32 volumes were gone, he was extremely angry and ended up calling the police on his mother.

The scorned son filed a complaint against his mother with the local police and later took her to court for destroying his personal property without his consent. In court, the 20-year-old man argued that Attack on Titan is a very popular manga, so finding another complete collection would be extremely difficult, considering that some of the 32 volumes are no longer in print and can be considered collector’s items.

On the other hand, his mother argued that some of the manga volumes were damp, and they were taking up so much room, so throwing them out of her home was justified. However, she expressed her desire to reconcile with her son, but he was unwilling to talk to her.

The incident took place in February of this year, but the Chiayi District Court only recently issued a verdict in this case, fining the mother 5,000 Taiwanese dollars ($160) for property damage, a sentence that can be commuted to community service. Her failure to respect her son’s property rights was inappropriate, the Court ruled.

According to Taiwanese media, the son is still unwilling to reconcile with his elderly mother.
