When his ex-wife, who left him after 12 years of marriage, told him he could do whatever he wished with her wedding dress, 38-year-old Kevin Cotter set out to prove a wedding dress isn’t as useless as you think, and became an Internet sensation in the process.
With the help of his brother Colin, box salesman Kevin Cotter managed to get over a painful divorce using what many would call an unorthodox therapy. Following his breakup and a family brainstorming session, the 38-year-old decided to try and find various uses for his ex’s wedding dress. Not the easiest of challenges, but the two brothers came up with 101 ways to reuse a wedding dress, started a successful site documenting their experiences and are now preparing to launch a book. MyExWifesWeddingDress.com became an Internet hit just three weeks after he started posing photos of ridiculous ways to repurpose a wedding dress, and letters of support started coming from all over the world. This inspired the Cotter brothers to come up with even more ridiculous dress uses. They discovered it made a great punching bag, yoga mat, shower curtain, snow camouflage, grill cover and even a Darth Vader scarecrow.

Although his journey of discovering wacky uses for a wedding dress is indeed hilarious, Kevin Cotter admits it was a cathartic experience. He and his ex-wife had been dating since highschool, more than half his life, and had two children together. When she left he was devastated and found himself “longing for those days when my house sounded like a home. The silence left me replaying the events of the last few years and wondering how everything I knew had simply fallen apart.” But thankfully, his crazy idea proved therapeutic and the 38-year-old divorcee remembers his brother told him that it wasn’t until they started working together with the wedding dress that he heard his real laugh return. With the help of his family, Kevin bounced back, has since remarried and says he’s happier than ever. As for his relationship with the ex, they get along just fine now since they share custody of their two children, aged 9 and 11, but says the wedding dress hasn’t been a topic for conversation in a long time. “I’m sure she’s very aware that the book is on its way, but it I don’t know that she’s preordered her copy, or that she’s going to ask me to sign it” Cotter says.
