This colorful grilled cheese looks like it belongs in a My Little Pony show, but it’s actually a real treat that’s all the rage in Hong Kong. It’s called the Rainbow Sandwich and consists of two slices of bread four different types of cheese, flavorings and, obviously, a lot of food dye.
The sandwich, a creation of Kala Toast, recently got its five minutes of fame after Instagram user @hkfoodiexblogger posted a photograph of the snack along with a brief review on his account. It got shared by his fans and eventually went viral after being picked up by major websites.

According to the Hong Kong food blogger, the sandwich costs 42 HKD (a little over $5), and contains different flavors corresponding to the different colors – “lavender (blue), basil (green), tomato (red) and the yellow one is actually a combination of 4 different kinds of cheese (mozzarella, cheddar, emmental, and gruyere).”

“The toast was crispy but I reckon both the flavour of the lavender and tomato were subtle,” the blogger described. “The basil flavour was the most outstanding one comparatively but the cheese flavour was still not as strong as my expectation. It was also a bit oily in general. I would say the quality was rather average but we all cannot deny that it is photogenic.”

So it may not be the tastiest grilled cheese sandwich in the world, but it’s definitely the most colorful and judging by its popularity in Hong Kong, that matters more.
