A woman who recently gave birth at a clinic in Miso, Japan, recently posted a series of photos of the food she was served there, and they make it look like she had her baby in a Michelin star restaurant.
When talking about hospital food, most people use phrases like “barely edible” or “tasteless” or “hard to stomach”, but Japan is proof that hospital food doesn’t have to be disgusting. Imgur user jenkinsinjapan, who was recently checked into a small OB-GYN clinic in Miso for childbirth, shared some photos of the various dishes she had to put up with there and they look mouthwatering.

The woman wrote that because her c-section wasn’t planned, she was served the hospital’s standard food course, which included pancakes, french toast, seafood and pasta, all so nicely served that they could put many high-class restaurants to shame.

“My c-section wasn’t planned so the food I got wasn’t really pre-surgery food. I couldn’t eat most of it anyway!” jenkinsinjapan wrote. “The meals weren’t specifically for people in labour. I’m not sure pregnancy food restrictions still apply when the baby is on its way out!”

Jenkinsinjapan made it clear that this was “a little privately owned OB-GYN clinic” but that “the costs were mostly covered by standard insurance”.

“I paid some extra but what I paid was pretty standard for most hospitals in the area,” she added.

While it would be unfair to project this exact standard for all hospitals and clinics in Japan, Japanese healthcare institutions are famous for the quality of their food. Last year, a similar Imgur post featuring photos of dishes served at a different hospital in Japan also went viral, and Japanese news website Grape reports that Japanese people frequently consider the quality of the food when selecting a hospital.
