Swinging Bridge, a simple yet hard-to-master game that has been around for about a decade, has been growing in popularity all over China.
Ever try to keep your balance on a wobbly rope bridge as someone else was purposely shaking it to make you fall off? Welcome to Swinging Bridge, the competitive balance game that really puts players’ body coordination and balance to the test. It is usually played by a dozen or so players split into two teams on opposite sides of a wobbly bridge above a shallow pool filled with water or soft mattresses to cushion the fall of those who can’t keep up with the rhythm. Each team tries to swing the bridge from one side to the other to put the other team off balance until one side remains standing. It’s a simple premise, but staying on your feet as the bridge moves at dizzying speeds requires perfect balance and coordination.
The Swinging Bridge game is believed to have originated at Shuoping Flower Field, a tourist spot in Ruzhou City, Henan Province, but it proved so popular that it gradually spread throughout the country. Its popularity in the Asian country is no surprise, as the game not only looks fun to play, but it provides entertainment to bystanders as well. At one point, it was featured on a reality show on Hunan Television, with millions tuning in to see guests facing off on the wobbly bridge.
Mastering the swinging bridge requires lots of practice, with beginners falling off at the first lateral movements, but seasoned players are a joy to watch, as they counter the swings with their own elegant leaps in opposite directions, or use their joints and perfect balance to absorb the movements of the bridge.
Videos of people playing Swinging Bridge have already gone viral in the Western world, but as far as we know, the game has yet to be played outside of China.
