Rocket-powered buses are undoubtedly among the most fun ways to get to school. I mean, if that doesn’t get kids excited about school, I don’t know what will. So an Indiana man actually invented such a jet powered school bus that can travel as fast as 367mph!
The bus, dubbed ‘School Time’ is the brainchild of petrol-head and engineer Paul Stender and his build team Indy Boys. Paul actually custom built the entire bus himself, because “there’s no way the original bus could have withstood the speeds” he takes it to. “A lot of it is hand-crafted and the types of metals used would be more at home on an aircraft,” he explained.
When School Time’s 42,000hp GE J-79 jet engine is revved up, giant 80-ft-long flames blast out the rear from the afterburner. Of course, that kind of power can hardly be fuel efficient, so it’s no surprise that this beast guzzles up 150 gallons of fuel in just a single run. And the beastly bus has such a huge engine that there’s only enough room left inside for three passengers.
Stender says he came up with the intimidating, awe-inspiring ride for two reasons: “The first is to entertain people, because, come on, it’s a jet bus. The second is to inspire kids to keep away from drugs.”
“It’s important for them to have active hobbies and creative interests to keep busy and keep away from bad influences,” he said. “That’s why we wrote our motto on the side of the bus – ‘Jets are hot – drugs are not.’ And I guess this is my revenge for all those days riding on the slow journey to school – now it goes at my kind of pace.”
School Time is presently on tour, enthralling motor fans at shows all over America. And although it can make sure kids are never late to school again, the bus sadly isn’t going to be making school trips any time soon.
