Canine Praised as ‘Miracle Dog’ Literally Crawled Out of Its Own Grave

Hosun, a South Korean dog who suffered severe injuries and was thought to be dead after being hit by a truck, gained legendary status after crawling out of its grave and walking home.

Hosun the “miracle dog” first made news headlines in South Korea six years ago, after going through a terrible car accident and coming back from the dead. She was only a four-month-old puppy when she was hit by a truck close to his owners’ home in the city of Yeongcheon, and her injuries were so severe that a neighbor who found her on the side of the road thought her dead. The man buried Hosun in a shallow grave in a nearby field and delivered the bad news to her owners when they came home. However, four days later, Hosun’s owners heard an animal’s wailing coming from a roadside ditch near their home and were shocked to find their beloved pet, terribly injured, but alive.

The poor dog’s hind legs were broken due to the car accident and she could barely support her weight on her front legs. Hosun’s amazed owners gave her some water and took her to a vet where she was diagnosed with multiple pelvis and hindleg fractures. However, he could not explain how the dog managed to crawl out of its grave and return home.

News of Hosun’s miraculous return became the talk of the town in her neighborhood and some believed that she had come back to life as a reincarnated deity. The legend spread, and before long, the producers of the hit TV show ‘What on Earth’ were knocking on her owners’ door asking for details. In 2018, an episode on the dog’s remarkable story aired in South Korea and cemented her reputation as a miracle dog.

“I got goosebumps all over my head because I thought she was dead,” Hosun’s owner recalled about the day she found the dog all covered in mud, wailing from a ditch about 80 meters from her house. She had run out through a hole in the fence four days earlier and had gotten hit by a truck. A neighbor swore that he felt no pulse when he found her, so he just buried her body in a field. So how did she “come back to life?”

An animal expert questioned by the TV show theorized that Hosun must have just been knocked unconscious by the impact with the truck, and because the man who buried her did so in a shallow grave, she was able to dig herself out with her from paws and then slowly crawl toward her home. She was lucky to have water in the ditch where she was found, otherwise she probably wouldn’t have survived.

Hosun’s story touched millions in South Korea, including a veterinary bone surgeon who contacted her owners and offered to operate on her to put the bones back in place and prevent future disability. It was a tough recovery, but Hosun pulled through and managed to regain full use of all four legs.

It’s been seven years since Hosun’s “return from the dead”, and she is busy living her best life with her loving owners. She still has a slight disability due to her severe injuries, but she can still run around the family home and enjoys a full and happy existence.

“She is a dog that went through two miracles,” a vet who claims to have checked on Hosun recently, said. “One is she came back to life from death, and the other is she lives and walks like a normal dog after serious injuries and a big operation.”
